3. Kevin Sumlin
The Texas A&M head coach is an excellent coach when it comes to bringing out the most in his offensive players. He has worked wonders with the Aggies since they transitioned from the Big 12 to the SEC. They responded to their conference switch by finishing with an 11-2 record. This season consisted of an upset win over eventual national champion Alabama and finishing fifth in the nation. Sumlin’s guidance also helped quarterback Johnny Manziel win the Heisman Trophy in his freshman season. Sumlin was able to help Texas A&M produce a prolific offense even after Manziel and wide receiver Mike Evans left for the NFL, so there’s no telling what he could do with the Eagles offense.
The Aggies have not matched the same success that they experienced in 2012, but a 36-15 record is no small feat for a team that barely finished above .500 in their last season in the Big 12. Sumlin received attention from Texas A&M for leading Houston to a 12-1 record in 2011, as Case Keenum threw for 48 touchdown passes in his senior year. Sumlin’s ability to coach up quarterbacks should leave the Eagles scrambling to contact him in any way they can.
Three conference Coach of the Year awards make him an intriguing candidate to jump to the NFL. The Eagles’ failed experiment with Kelly should not scare them away from trying again in the college ranks.
