The New York Giants might be targeting Nick Saban as Tom Coughlin’s replacement.

We are almost to Black Monday in the NFL, and while Titans, Dolphins and Eagles have all gotten a ahead start on things, there are still a handful of names to keep an eye on. One of those names is New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin. It seems like he’s been living on borrowed time ever since the Giants hired him, but we might finally see Coughlin ride off into the sunset at the end of this season.

Last year it was assumed that Coughlin would be fired but the Giants brought him back. It was also assumed that he was being brought back for one final ride, something the Giants poor record this year almost solidified.

According to Albert Breer from the NFL Network, one team that could make a play for Nick Saban are the New York Giants. The rationale behind that speculation stems from history between the Mara family and Saban — and the fact that Tom Coughlin’s days are numbered.

Coughlin being fired makes too much sense to not happen, and he will probably be allowed to retire rather than be shown the door — even though we know that’s the real story. That being said, there’s no guaranteed that Saban will A) be interested in an NFL job and B) be interested in the Giants job.

There might be some connection between the Mara family and Saban — and the idea of coaching in the biggest market in America would be on Saban’s ego level. That being said, the spotlight would be on him like never before and the pressure on unlike he’s ever experienced. He has such a good thing going for him at the college level, and while he might have NFL demons to exorcise, waiting until 2017 to put himself on the market might open up just about any Power 5 job he wants.

That’s more Saban’s style than bolting from Tuscaloosa this year to take a job in the NFL. But then again, crazier things have happened and it wouldn’t be the first time the head coach left a job abruptly to take on a bigger one.
