Round 6: Cyrus Jones, Cornerback, Alabama

Alabama’s Cyrus Jones is another player who likely could have gone much higher in the draft, but off-the-field issues bring him to where he is.

Jones was involved in a domestic violence case in which the charges were dropped earlier this year. While every player is hyper-scrutinized coming into the draft, Jones could be an interesting pick in the later rounds if the Rams feel confident with him away from the field.

Jones intercepted one pass, broke up seven and made 29 tackles in his second season as a full-time starter. He was also one of the best players on a defense that ranked fourth in passing defensive efficiency.  He’s a solid coverage cornerback that has made his fair share of plays on the defensive side of the football.

However, Jones is extremely valuable as a punt returner. He lead the nation in 2015 with three punt return touchdowns and was fourth in the SEC in punt return average this season. Jones entered Alabama as a wide receiver, and knows what he is doing with the ball in his hands.

A bit undersized at 5’10, he is still long for a cornerback. His personal issues will drop him in the draft significantly, but the Rams could capitalize on a solid talent if everything checks out logistically.
