Round 7: D’haquille Williams, Wide Receiver, Auburn

Auburn’s D’haquille Williams is another player who could be a gamble, but one that could be worth the risk of just a seventh round pick.

Before the season started, Williams was ranked as a premier receiver prospect and many projected him to be a first round selection. Unfortunately, Williams was dismissed from Auburn for undisclosed reasons, and many seem to believe it was due to his work ethic.

Yes, the potential lack of work ethic could be a major problem for him going forward; however, Williams is a unique talent.

As a five-star receiver recruit, Williams netted over 700 yards and five touchdowns in Auburn’s run-heavy offense in 2014. Then-Auburn quarterback Nick Marshall was primarily a running threat, but Williams was still able to do major damage to opposing defenses.

At 6’2″ 240, Williams has a prototype build and an incredible amount of raw talent and athleticism. However, sometimes that forces him to rely on that talent and athleticism which could end up hurting him later in a route. He is extraordinarily long and has the ability to high-point the football with the best players in the country.

Williams could be a flop, but he also could be the steal of the century. It’s worth the seventh-round pick to take a chance on a player such as Williams. Who knows, maybe he could pan out as one of the top receivers in the league. He sure has the talent to do so.
