5 NFL destinations for Jason Garrett in 2016
By Randy Gurzi
4. New Orleans Saints
Little known fact alert! Jason Garrett started his NFL career in New Orleans. Undrafted in 1989 out of Princeton, the quarterback spent 1989 and 1990 in New Orleans before heading to San Antonio and playing in the World League of American Football.
So this could be kind of like a homecoming as well, but that’s not what makes Garrett becoming a head coach for the Saints a possibility.
Instead, this job makes sense due to the fact that it only comes open if Sean Payton decides to leave, per reports. If Payton does leave, the rumors are he would return to Dallas where he used to be an offensive coordinator under Bill Parcells. Should Garrett be fired for Payton, it would make sense for New Orleans to give Garrett a call.
He and Payton are pretty different in philosophies, where Garrett likes the physical, zone running scheme. Payton is more of a vertical offense that uses their running backs in a myriad of ways.
For Garrett, the Saints have the start to the style of team he loves. After acquiring center Max Unger and drafting tackle Andrus Peat, they are building a strong offensive line. They also have a running back Garrett was rumored to want in Mark Ingram, who played at Alabama with Garrett’s friend Nick Saban.
The best part is they have an old quarterback in Drew Brees, and Cowboys fans know how much Garrett loves old quarterbacks. Both teams could benefit from such a move as each coach could give the other team a breath of fresh air as they try to break out their current ruts.
