Mike McCoy will remain as the head coach for the San Diego Chargers, even after his worst season as a head coach, going 4-12 in 2015.

CBSSports.com’s Jason La Canfora reports that the San Diego Chargers are close to finalizing their decision to retain head coach Mike McCoy, even after a massively disappointing 4-12 2015 NFL season.

McCoy went 9-7 in his first two years with the Chargers, leading San Diego to the AFC Playoffs as a Wild Card team in his first season as a head coach in 2013. The Chargers have never finished better than in third place in the AFC West and after an injury-riddled 2015 campaign, San Diego will have the No. 3 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.

San Diego has dealt with the worst home field advantage in football the last year or so, where sometimes nearly half of Qualcomm Stadium was rooting for the Chargers’ opponent.

Owner Dean Spanos is one of three owners in the National Football League to apply for relocation to Los Angeles along with the Oakland Raiders’ Mark Davis and the St. Louis Rams’ Stan Kroenke. Not surprisingly due to the threat of relocation, not one of these three teams are looking for a new head coach at this time.

However should any of the three teams’ bids to relocate to Los Angeles be approved by the NFL, then one could expect a coaching change with either the Chargers or the Rams. McCoy has been so-so with the Chargers and Jeff Fisher routinely finishes at or around .500 with the Rams. The Raiders have a solid young corps and a good head coach in Jack Del Rio. For now, McCoy’s job with Chargers remains safe.
