Jim Tomsula will make $14 million for his year’s work with the San Francisco 49ers.

In modern day NFL, the numbers are quite often mind boggling. $100 million deals are becoming more and more common, as evidenced by Ndamukong Suh and Justin Houston’s big money contracts from the off season. However, when a coach works for a year, and produces a poor product at that, and earns $14 million, then the numbers truly become farcical.  That is just what Jim Tomsula has done.

The San Francisco 49ers were widely criticized for sacking Jim Harbaugh last Summer. They turned to Jim Tomsula in their time of need, and quite frankly, it didn’t work, and never looked as though it would work. The 49ers have been utterly terrible, so much so, that Colin Kaepernick was replaced by Blaine Gabbert. If that is not the definition of a poor season, then I don’t know what is.

The 49ers slumped to a 5-11 record, last in the NFC West, and now hold the number seven draft pick. Unfortunately for Tomsula, he will not get to reap the rewards of such a high placed pick. But don’t feel too bad the guy. He did earn a quite frankly ridiculous $14 million for his year’s work.

To put that in perspective, Harbaugh, the man who Tomsula replaced and the man who was significantly more successful, earned $20 million dollars over four years. These astronomical figures are part and parcel of modern football. However, Tomsula has certainly ripped the 49ers off, and while he will be saddened to lose his job, he’ll soon cheer up when he checks his bank statement.
