5. Retirement

You’ve done well, Coughlin. Sit back, relax, and live a normal life without the early morning and late nights of the NFL life. Spend time with those closest to you. Those grandchildren would love to see you at their sporting events and recitals. They would have the biggest grins on their faces when introducing grandpa to their friends and explaining he has two Super Bowl Rings.

Given his resume, Coughlin should be a quick “in” to the Football Hall of Fame. Coaching longer won’t help him do anything he has already done. The only reason he wouldn’t want to retire is that he isn’t ready for a new lifestyle and daily routine.

Yet, Coughlin should take some time off to consider whether or not to step away from football. Football came first before other important things, so it wouldn’t be shocking if he wants to spend some time with family and friends and retire from coaching. In the end, Coughlin could also un-retire by pulling a Brett Favre and return to coaching down the road.

Not every team operates like the Giants and displays that much loyalty. The last thing Coughlin needs is to be disrespected by a team’s front office. However, given the stance that he won’t be retiring, this option most likely won’t happen before he decides to coach elsewhere.
