Best 2016 NFL Draft quarterback prospects
5. Carson Wentz
At 6-foot-6 and 235 pounds, Wentz has the perfect size to play quarterback in the NFL. He’s built much like Ben Roethlisberger, giving him the height to look over the offensive line and the weight to handle a charging linebacker. Wentz is overlooked because he played at a small-school way off the national radar, but he’s a legitimate prospect out of North Dakota State.
Wentz is a senior who really played well this season before breaking his wrist. In six games, he threw 16 touchdowns against only two interceptions while completing 63.7 percent of his throws for 1,454 yards. If you do the math and put that over a full season, Wentz’s yards are not outstanding, but the rest of the numbers are fantastic. Last year, Wentz racked up 25 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 16 games, throwing for 3,111 yards with an identical completion rate.
Is Wentz a first or second-round pick? Probably not. His accuracy still needs to be developed and coming from such a small program against poor competition, Wentz would probably benefit most from playing behind a capable starter for the first couple years of his career. One comparison would be Tony Romo, who played at Eastern Illinois and sat behind Drew Bledsoe for a few seasons until former head coach Bill Parcells gave him a shot.
