The Tennessee Titans have an interview set with Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin

The Tennessee Titans have one of the many head coaching vacancies in the NFL. While Mike Mularkey is their interim head coach, they have yet to name a permanent head coach. They will reportedly interview Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin, according to Ian Rapoport.

Austin could be a welcome change for the Titans should he be hired as their head coach. Their previous two head coaches (Ken Whisenhunt and Mularkey) both have backgrounds in offense. Austin would be a more defensive-minded coach, something that could work in the AFC South. With Blake Bortles developing quickly and Andrew Luck in Indianapolis, perhaps Austin is the kind of guy who the Titans should be seeking.

Austin received rave reviews when he was the secondary coach for the Baltimore Ravens during their Super Bowl run in 2012. He coached for them from 2011 to 2013. He went to Detroit when Jim Caldwell was hired by the Detroit Lions and Caldwell made him his defensive coordinator.

The Lions ranked 14th in passing yards allowed per game (236.6) and 18th in rushing yards per game (113.0) with Austin as their defensive coordinator. The Titans are looking for stability in their coaching staff. Hiring Teryl Austin to be their head coach could be the way to do it.
