3. Nate Kaeding – Jets vs. Chargers, 2010

I’m sorry, that was really mean what I just did to the Jets. Let’s put them on the winning side of this list for once. In this game, the Jets won 17-14, scoring 17 straight in the second half. But what was most famous (or infamous) was Nate Kaeding’s three missed field goals – two of which could’ve extended the Chargers’ lead to 13, and the third one before a touchdown drive which, if the field goal was made, would’ve tied the game. Instead, the Chargers were forced to onside kick and the Jets recovered to run out the clock.

You can forgive Kaeding for at least one of the missed field goals – a 57-yarder that was simply meant to end the first half. But even hitting two out of three would’ve won the game for San Diego. Sure the Chargers offense was anemic all game long. But the Jets didn’t get a single first down in the opening quarter. This game was right there for the taking.

This has to go down as one of the Chargers’ worst ever playoff losses. It’s a shame that, for a fan base as passionate as San Diego’s, they’ve never got to see their teams win a championship. And because of that, there’s a very good chance that this team might end up moving to LA.
