Oliver’s ex-girlfriend has also joined his vigilante group of heroes, which puts her in danger as well. She’s had some training, but nothing compared to what the Green Arrow has done to prepare himself for his role as the city’s savior. At least Diggle has a military background and Thea was trained by her father, who happens to be the new Ra’s al Ghul. If there’s a weak link on this team that has the inexperience to get themselves killed in the field, it’s Black Canary.

Another factor working against Laurel is that with her sister, Sara Lance, having been resurrected, we now have two Canaries. Sara will be a key member of the upcoming Legends of Tomorrow show that debuts on the CW this month, so while that may limit her screen time on Arrow, she still exists in this universe and isn’t going anywhere. If the show runners decide they don’t need both a White and a Black Canary, Laurel would be the more likely one to go.

On the other hand, having been down this road with one Canary being killed before, it seems redundant to play that card again, even if there is no intention to bring her back to life this time. Oliver would certainly grieve over the loss of Laurel, but would it be any different from what we’ve already seen when he thought Sara was gone?

Also, if it was either of the Lance sisters in that grave then why was their father, Quentin, nowhere to be seen? Even if the scene is meant to show us what happens after the funeral service has ended, wouldn’t Captain Lance stick around to be the last one on the scene so that he could get one last moment alone to say goodbye to his daughter? The same logic dictates that it can’t be Captain Lance that dies, since Laurel (possibly Sara as well) would naturally have to be there.
