Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink has stated that relegation at the end of the season is a realistic threat for his side.

It has been a very disappointing year for Chelsea. They were utterly clueless under Jose Mourinho, and while Guus Hiddink has steadied the ship a little, Chelsea haven’t returned to their top form just yet. The good thing about Hiddink, in particular for the media, is that he is totally upfront and honest, and here, he concedes that his side have not been playing well enough to dispel the relegation doubts over the London club.

Speaking before their weekend’s game with Everton, Hiddink stated that:

"“It’s reality. We have two difficult games coming up. If you don’t gather points there, you don’t know what the others do. The Premier League can surprise you. There are 12 points difference to fourth place, which is Tottenham. We all like to look forward and to the top of the table, but also don’t be unrealistic – you’re six points off the line of relegation. That’s also a fact. We have to work hard and be very concentrated and gather our points to step up.”"

Chelsea have been thoroughly disappointing this year and have looked like prime relegation candidates all season. However, their squad is still jam-packed full of stars, and it would be surprising if they were to find themselves in the bottom three of the league come May.

Hiddink is a top class manager, as evidenced by his performance at Stamford Bridge last time around, and under his orchestration, it would be an incredible story to see the defending champions playing in the Championship next season. Yes, there’s still a possibility that Chelsea could get relegated, but no, it’s not going to happen.
