New York Knicks

It’s no secret that the Knicks aren’t in the best situation with their backcourt. All the promise and excitement in the world is centred around the young star that is Kristaps Porzingis, yet their guard rotation isn’t exactly the same. Langston Galloway started the season shooting well but has cooled down, rookie Jerian Grant has shown flashes of potential but is limited minutes wise for now, while Jose Calderon offers minimal scoring and poor defense.

If they really want to start climbing towards the top of the Eastern Conference going forward, they need a better starting point guard. It’s just essential in today’s guard dominant NBA. And as Marc Berman of the New York Post has reported, the Knicks already have Jennings on their radar:

"The Knicks have Pistons backup point guard Brandon Jennings, a free agent this summer, on their radar, but that would require a complicated trade. Point guard Jose Calderon has been erratic and, after a red-hot start to the season, backup Galloway has cooled."

As Berman pointed out, making a trade for Jennings won’t be easy for the Knicks. Post injury state aside, they’ll need to package together a couple of players to bring someone of his talent away from Detroit, so this rides on just how much the Knicks want a new point guard.

In terms of scoring, the Knicks need more a well-rounded attack. They have just three players scoring in double-digits (Porzingis, Carmelo Anthony and Arron Afflalo), and Jennings could step in as the starter to add a slashing and driving element to their offense that they lack. According to TeamRankings.com, the Knicks currently rank dead last in the NBA in points in the paint per game, which means that someone who can create inside the three-point line could make a real difference.

Jennings has averaged 8.1 assists per 36 minutes over the last three seasons, and his handles, energy and passing could help create more for others. While his shot selection and efficiency can be awry at times, he’s still a playmaker that can help the Knicks continue their improvement.
