48.
The Buccaneers pulled a sharp left turn by firing Lovie Smith well after the bodies from Black Sunday and Monday had well turned cold. While their in-state brethren Dolphins moved uber-quickly at axing their coach midseason (R.I.P. Joe Philbin) the Bucs wanted to make sure they had done super-duper due diligence. With their latest head-coaching selection, the Bucs chose to go with offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter.

Side note: This is the latest incestuous relationship between the Bucs and Falcons: Koetter, Rich McKay – it’s like a recruiting pipeline between these clubs.

Anywho, there would be a temptation to go with an offensive player in this spot given Koetter’s background, but with the team needing help in the front seven, they stick with a pass-rusher in Shilique Calhoun.

Calhoun is a mature player who performed wonders under Mark Dantonio in one of the nation’s best defenses. He increased both his tackles and sacks during every season in East Lansing. For his senior campaign, Calhoun registered 10.5 sacks (13th-best in the nation) – two of which came in his team’s dramatic victory Iowa in the Big Ten Championship Game.

With the pick, Tampa Bay now has a powerful rusher to put pressure on the likes of Drew Brees, Matt Ryan and Cam Newton – three banner quarterbacks who play behind less than stellar offensive lines.
.
