5 teams that lost the MLB offseason
The Cincinnati Reds had a dismal 2015 season, finishing 64-98 and at the bottom of the National League Central. With a roster that is clearly not built to win now, it became clear that the Reds would enter this offseason as sellers.
Dealing Arolidis Chapman to the New York Yankees has been one of the biggest offseason moves, but the return was not as bountiful as one would believe. The Yankees were able to hold onto their top prospects and still acquire the hard-throwing left-hander. In comparison the Red Sox traded top prospects Manuel Margot and Javier Guerra to the Padres for top-tier closer Craig Kimbrel.
One would think that the Reds could have gotten more for Chapman but in the end Cincinnati’s desire to move him overcame the return. Trading 2015 MLB Home Run Derby Champion Todd Frazier was also a big blow to the franchise and it’s fan base. Frazier is a great player and fan favorite and will sorely be missed on and off the field.
The Red’s have done very little to help their team for the 2016 season, their rotation is a mess with only one proven starter in Homer Bailey. The loss of Chapman completely changes the face of the Red’s bullpen and finding a replacement closer will be difficult. The Reds still have big contracts in Jay Bruce, Joey Votto, and Brandon Phillips so don’t be surprised if we see either of those players moved before the season.
It looks to be a long season in store for the Reds, especially from a pitching standpoint. Cincinnati would be wise to bring in a few bargain free agents to fill glaring needs, while simultaneously playing their young talent and looking to the future.
