The Knicks have had a surprisingly good year. However, things could be better. Considering the recent fallout that has happened with coach Derek Fisher, maybe it’s time for Phil Jackson to do the inevitable and bring his favorite coach’s pet Luke Walton to New York.
Jackson and Walton obviously have a strong working relationship with each other as Jackson coached Walton with the Lakers. Jackson even started inviting Walton to coaches meetings later in his career, which probably helped plant the seed for Walton to have a career as a coach. Walton owes a lot of his success to Jackson. What better way for Walton to repay Jackson for everything that he has done for him than by coaching for him?
The Knicks are a big market team. With that comes a ton of pressure to win. Luke Walton played with the only team that might have more pressure to win than the Knicks (the Lakers) for a majority of his career. He knows all about ridiculous expectations and how to deal with a relentless media. The Knicks would also likely benefit from having a more fast paced and high scoring offense. They certainly have the pieces.
Finally, what might swing the tides towards the Knicks for Walton is the opportunity to coach Carmelo Anthony and Kristaps Porzingis. Walton could do so much with that versatile duo. It takes a different kind of coach to succeed in the Big Apple. Luke Walton has everything necessary to be that coach.
