Third X-Files film has been written

Fans of The X-Files might get a second dose of new content if Fox’s mini-series event does well over the next few weeks.
Series creator Chris Carter revealed last week that he’s written the third installment of the film franchise based on his hit TV show, though no agreement has yet been reached to produce the movie.
David Duchovney and Gillian Anderson starred in the television show that ran on Fox from 1993 to 2002. The pair played partners in the FBI who were assigned to investigate the strangest cases the bureau came across, many of which were supernatural or extraterrestrial in nature.
Audiences responded well to the show and it continues to have a cult following to this day, especially after the show was remastered and added to Netflix in 2015.
The first movie, entitled simply The X-Files, was released in 1998 at the height of the show’s original run on Fox. It was followed ten years later by a second film, The X-Files: I Want to Believe.
Despite a rabid fan base for the original television show, neither movie did well enough in the box office to justify a third film. New developments might change that, however.
A six-episode mini-series revival of the The X-Files was announced by Fox shortly before the original run of the show was put on Netflix. Carter, Duchovney and Anderson all returned, along with several more familiar faces both old and new.
The preview of the mini-series premiered on Sunday night following the NFC Championship game between the Arizona Cardinals and Carolina Panthers and received strong ratings.
Monday’s debut on the mini-series’ normal night will be the true test, along with the subsequently five episodes. Should that run be as strong as many suspect that it will be, a third film might yet by in the cards.
