Of course, the only logical place to go from Spygate’s Jets/Pats feud is to Deflategate’s Pats/NFL feud, exemplified most profoundly in the ongoing legal battle between Roger Goodell and Tom Brady. Already carrying the onus of cheating allegations, the last thing New England needed was another major scandal, but that’s exactly what they got when the Indianapolis Colts tipped the league off to underinflated footballs in last year’s AFC Championship Game.

The weeks leading up to the Super Bowl were dominated by bizarre press conferences and conflicting media reports, and the shadow of Deflategate cast a pall over the entire NFL offseason. Brady was suspended the first four games of the 2015 season and the Pats were docked a first round draft pick and levied a substantial fine. Brady appealed his suspension, lost, then took league commissioner Goodell and the NFL to court.

Judge Richard Berman somewhat unexpectedly sided with Brady and exonerated the quarterback, though the league continues to appeal the decision. It’s just the latest in the ongoing deterioration of relations between the NFL and its former golden boy.
