Jimmy Johnson had some pretty big shoes to fill when he replaced Dallas Cowboys legend Tom Landry as head coach, but he immediately stepped in and showed his savvy as a coach and team builder by exporting Herschel Walker for draft picks and selecting Troy Aikman to be his quarterback.

Under Johnson, the Cowboys returned to glory, winning two Super Bowls and producing some of the organization’s most storied names such as Aikman, Emmitt Smith, and Michael Irvin. Yet despite all the winning, Johnson only lasted five years in Dallas.

Why? That other JJ… Jerry Jones. The Cowboys owner wanted more say on personnel matters, and Johnson wasn’t willing to give that up. After Dallas won the Super Bowl in 1993, Jones told the media that any coach could have led his team to the championship, which understandably rankled Johnson. The two egos decided to part ways in March of 1994, and to this day their relationship remains sour.
