50 Best Sports Movies Ever
19. Caddyshack
Year: 1980
Sport: Golf
Starring: Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield, Bill Murray, Ted Knight, Michael O’Keefe
Director: Harold Ramis
The late great Harold Ramis directed a number of films that will be remembered for years to come. Instantly recognizable films such as National Lampoon’s Vacation, Groundhog Day and Analyze This helped Ramis emerge as a comedic master in the film industry.
It was in 1980, however, that Ramis arrived with his cult classic and sports comedy gem Caddyshack.
As he always seems to do, Bill Murray stole the show in this bizarre and uproarious comedy as Carl Spackler—greenskeeper for an exclusive golf course that’s in danger of losing its luster. Comedy giants Chevy Chase and Rodney Dangerfield are at their best as Ramis takes a comedic look inside sports’ high society.
Caddyshack provides enough constantly referenced quotes for someone to write an entirely new script—and, in today’s climate, we all know it’s coming—but it’s Chase’s Ty Webb who’s included on this slide for his effortless putting.
Quirky, absurd, the best thing that’s ever happened to planet earth; whatever you’d like to call Caddyshack, I’m in no position to disagree.
Most would prefer for films on this list to be of a more serious nature, but as previous selections have shown, comedy can earn its place when done right. So long as the actual sports scenes are executed in a captivating way, and the film is based around a sport, it deserves to be selected.
Thus, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that Caddyshack appears with a very solid ranking. It has a rabid legion of fans for a reason.
