In 1981, director Hugh Hudson took to the world of sports to tell a culturally significant story. What came about were four Academy Awards, three more nominations, and the distinction of being one of the greatest sports films ever made.
Some may believe that this is lower than it should be, but regardless of where it appears, Chariots of Fire is an obvious selection for this list.
Chariots of Fire is a story about two runners who attend the 1924 Olympics: Eric Liddell and Harold Abrahams. Liddell is a devout Christian who runs for God, while Abrahams is looking to fight the prejudices that are set against Jewish people.
The obstacles that both men had to overcome were endured on and off of the track. Exhibit A:
That scene is one of the most famous from a movie that’s as emotionally charged and inspirational as any that’s ever been made.
This true story is one of despair, tenacity, and a religiously-motivated will to be successful. Not everyone is built for a film about track and field, but this is the type of movie that renders fandom or knowledge of the sport irrelevant.
Chariots of Fire is a sports masterpiece that deserves to be mentioned amongst the greatest sports films ever made.
