8. Remember the Titans
Year: 2000
Sport: American Football
Starring: Denzel Washington, Will Patton, Wood Harris, Ryan Hurst, Donald Faison
Director: Boaz Yakin
From time to time, films are released that bring the truest and most visceral of emotions out from within us. They reach our deepest feelings, touching upon social and personal issues in ways that transcend political affiliation.
Remember the Titans is one of those films.
Denzel Washington and Will Patton star in this classic about a racially divided town and its mirroring high school football team. Washington, who has won two Academy Awards, gives one of the most powerful performances of his illustrious career as head coach Herman Boone.
The famous Ronnie Bass scene is evidence enough of how perfectly Washington fit the role.
The memorable moments never stopped coming.
On the field, Remember the Titans did an excellent job of illustrating the physicality of American football. Off of it, director Boaz Yakin and screenwriter Gregory Allen Howard told the story of a divided locker room that became a band of brothers under the guidance of a head coach who would not be deterred—no matter how disturbingly racist the antics of his detractors became.
This film will live on in sports history as one of the greatest ever made.
