6. Brian’s Song

Year: 1971
Sport: American Football
Starring: James Caan, Billy Dee Williams, Jack Warden, Bernie Casey, Shelley Fabares, David Huddleston
Director: Buzz Kulik

In all fairness, Brian’s Song was a made-for-television release that spanned just 73 minutes. It wasn’t a theatrical film, and for that reason, some may contest that it shouldn’t appear on a slideshow dedicated to sports movies.

Television movie or otherwise, Brian’s Song brings one of the most powerful sports stories to light, and that deserves a high-ranking spot.

James Caan portrays Brian Piccolo, who spent four years in the NFL as a fullback for the Chicago Bears. Starring alongside him is Billy Dee Williams as Gale Sayers, who was a five-time First-Team All-Pro running back and two-time rushing champion for Chicago between 1965 and 1971.

Unfortunately, Brian’s Song is based around more than just their bond on the field; it’s about the friendship that was strengthened and solidified after Piccolo discovered that he had a life-threatening disease.

Piccolo passed away at age 26 on June 16, 1970, but not before leaving behind a legacy that was beautifully exemplified in this emotionally overwhelming film.

Caan’s performance as Piccolo and Williams’ work as Sayers were heralded upon Brian Song’s 1971 release. It’s universally recognized as a great movie, and does an excellent job of maintaining the message that life is bigger than sports.

Brian’s Song received nine Emmy Award nominations, including Best Actor for both Caan and Williams.
