National Signing Day 2016: 5 signees likely to start immediately
By John Buhler
With multi-year starting quarterback Kevin Hogan graduating and entering the 2016 NFL Draft, the Stanford Cardinal have some decisions to make about who their new starting quarterback will be. True freshman K.J. Costello will battle with Palo Alto native sophomore Keller Chryst this coming season.
Chryst may come from a great football family, as his uncle Paul is the head coach of the Wisconsin Badgers and his father Geep was the offensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers in 2015, but Costello has this certain something that could help him be a strong starter for the Cardinal as a true freshman.
Of the six quarterbacks that played in the US Army All-American Game, Costello perhaps had the best composure playing against some of the best players in the country. He looked great in the red zone for the West team and could stand as a reliable starter for Stanford head coach David Shaw as early as 2016.
Costello will have the luxury of playing behind a dominant offensive line and being able to hand the football off to a Heisman finalist in junior running back Christian McCaffrey. Stanford will have a strong competition for starting quarterback, as the Cardinal have to find a suitable replacement for Hogan. Perhaps it’s the true freshman Costello in 2016?
