Brandon Browner hints at apparent release from Saints
The New Orleans Saints have apparently informed Brandon Browner of his release.
No team is in worse financial shape in regards to the 2016 National Football League salary cap than the New Orleans Saints. With that in mind, New Orleans is apparently cutting cornerback Brandon Browner, only one year into a three-year pact with the club, worth $15 million. On Friday morning, Browner, 30, sent on the following message on social media, per Pro Football Talk.
"“I truly did love the city, really wanted to do well,” Browner wrote. “Some of the best people, best hospitality, and food. And a city that will show you a good time. How could you beat that?”"
Browner was a major disappointment for New Orleans, contributing to the league’s worst defense and racking up over 20 flags, the most in the NFL last season. However, this speaks to a bigger problem with the Saints. The release only saves New Orleans a paltry $950,000 unless they wait until after June 1 (highly unlikely since the Saints are currently projected to be $7.9 million over the cap), when the savings becomes $2.25 million, per Joel Corry.
There is a very good chance that general manager Mickey Loomis will also be cutting wide receiver Marques Colston, which would save $3.2 million. The largest problem is Drew Brees, who is making an absurd $30 million in the final year of his contract this upcoming season.
