124.
Sheldon Rankins being available with the 28th overall pick is a testament to just how deep the 2016 NFL Draft is with defensive linemen.

Kansas City doesn’t need another defensive tackle in the present, but Dontari Poe is about to enter the final year of his rookie contract and the Chiefs could certainly use another talented body. More than anything, though, this would be a pure value pick for the organization, as Rankins profiles as closer to a top-15 pick than to a player that would fall out of the first round entirely.

The Chiefs could easily go with a safety or even another cornerback (as insurance for free agent-to-be Sean Smith) and, with Andy Reid, adding to the offense wouldn’t be a bad idea either in the form of depth along the offensive line. However, Rankins fits the “best player available” mold at the current stage, and with Poe demanding what will likely be an enormous contract with his upcoming free agency, having a strong backup plan is never a bad thing.

Kansas City is in a weird place in that the organization doesn’t have a ton of gaping holes, but in the same breath, the Chiefs aren’t terribly close to contending for a Super Bowl. That situation opens a lot of doors, and they are a true wild card in this draft.
. DT. Louisville. Sheldon Rankins. 28. player
