35. 2007 New York Giants (SB XLII)

Just as the 2009 Saints were a fantastic story, so too are the 2007 New York Giants. After all, it doesn’t get a whole lot better than a team that many viewed as an underdog for most of the season going into the Super Bowl and ruining an undefeated juggernaut’s chances at perfection. However, narratives don’t always mean that they are a particularly great team in the grand scheme of things.

The Giants went 10-6 in the regular season, but that very well may have been them playing well above their heads. Eli Manning and the offense ranked as just the No. 14 offense in the league while their defense was even a bit worse than that as the No. 17 unit in that regard. However, they were a team who rose to the occasion and either played to their potential or played like a better team than they actually were in the playoffs.

Obviously the culmination of the playoffs was their big showing as they made the Patriots 18-1, but they also took down a feisty Buccaneers team and a talented Green Bay Packers team along the way to the Super Bowl as well. Even still, the Giants weren’t all that impressive on the year as a whole, even if they get some bonus points for taking down the mighty Patriots.
