31. 1983 Los Angeles Raiders (SB XVIII)

One year removed from the strike shortened 1982 NFL season, the 1983 Los Angeles Raiders came through with just one more big time performance in the Jim Plunkett era. They ran through the season with a 12-4 record to win the AFC West before going into the postseason and absolutely dominating on their way to a Super Bowl.

Plunkett was at the end of the career in the 1983 regular season, but he had plenty of help in the offense in the form of young running backs Marcus Allen and Frank Hawkins, as well as tight end Todd Christensen. The L.A. offense finished the year as the No. 3-ranked unit in the league, though the defense wasn’t nearly as impressive as they ranked just 13th in the NFL in that regard. Even still, their prowess when they were at their best was almost untouchable by any other team in the league.

What really gives this 1983 Raiders team their boost, though, is the fact that they were a juggernaut once they got into the postseason. They outscored their opponents in their three playoff games by a combined score of 106-33 and never looked back. While there have obviously been better teams in Super Bowl history, the Raiders were still deserving of their shine.
