28. 2014 New England Patriots (SB XLIX)

In all honesty, it’s hard to gauge where the 2014 New England Patriots should fall in these rankings, largely because of how recent and fresh their dramatic win over the Seattle Seahawks was in Super Bowl XLIX. However, that’s the task at hand and firmly in the middle of the rankings feels just about right as the Pats of last year certainly weren’t an all-time great team to win a ring, but also weren’t one of the worst by any stretch of the imagination.

Tom Brady and the offense continued to thrive under Bill Belichick with the help of the always entertaining Rob Gronkowski and of Julian Edelman. They finished their 12-4 regular season with the No. 4-ranked offense in the league. Their defense was impressive for much of the year also (No. 8 in the NFL for the season), but they were largely impressive as one of the most balanced teams in terms of offense and defense in the league.

Obviously the Pats needed a last-second interception to get past a great Seahawks team, but they also barely beat a Ravens team that wasn’t particularly great in the Divisional Round before demolishing the Colts. Putting them in the middle of all the Super Bowl winners in history just feels right for a very good, but not great, team like last year’s Patriots.
