20. 1971 Dallas Cowboys (SB VI)

The Dallas Cowboys have had a multitude of success throughout the history of the franchise, but it all got started after the 1971 season when the Cowboys behind, legendary head coach Tom Landry (and his hat) and quarterback Roger Staubach, were able to get over the hump and capture the NFL’s top prize by earning a victory in Super Bowl VI.

The Cowboys went 11-3 in the regular season, largely due to the fact that Staubach was injured for part of the year and forced to make way for Craig Morton at quarterback. However, the rushing attack of Duane Thomas, Walt Garrison, and Calvin Hill led the way for the Cowboys to have the best scoring offense in the NFL on the year. The defense wasn’t on that level, but wasn’t far behind as the seventh-ranked unit in the league in terms of points conceded.

If 11-3 doesn’t make you impressed with the 1971 Cowboys, their postseason performance should. In their three games in the playoffs, Dallas outscored their opponents by a combined 58-18, including pure domination of the Dolphins in the Super Bowl to the tune of 24-3. Without the Staubach injury, this team could’ve been higher. But there’s also no denying their deserved respect in a historical sense.
