Super Bowl power rankings: Which winner is the greatest?
6. 1991 Washington Redskins (SB XXVI)
While the Redskins are currently trying to return to their former glory, some fans may forget just how good the Washington teams of old. However, the 1991 Redskins under the guidance of the legendary Joe Gibbs might be the most unlikely team in the top-10 of these rankings considering that they weren’t high on players that you would call the stars of the game. However, that lack of “star power” doesn’t take anything away from just how good this team was.
Mark Rypien was the starting quarterback for the 1991 Washington team and he played unquestionably the best football of his career as they were far and away the best offense in the NFL in the 1991 season, posting 30.3 points per game. Moreover, their defense didn’t let up either as they allowed a mere 14 points per game, the second-best mark in the country. Their 16.3 points per game differential is one of the better marks that you’ll see in these rankings.
Like most of the teams at the top of the rankings, though, the Redskins carried their regular season success into a dominant postseason performance as they rolled through the Falcons in a 17-point victory before trouncing the Lions 41-10 in the NFC Championship game. It was a closer contest in the Super Bowl against the Buffalo Bills, but even then Washington still won by 13 points to full assert their greatness on the rest of the league.
