San Diego Padres

Now we get into what is being reported as the true favorite to land Lazarito. Maybe this was what the seemingly one-sided trade of Jedd Gyorko was all about. I will admit that this one simply doesn’t make a whole lot of sense for either the team or the player. Lazarito is a sweet-swinging outfield prospect, and while the Padres need outfielders after the departure of Justin Upton, power doesn’t usually play well in Petco Park.

Regardless, the Padres are interested in spending money again. This would be the right way this time, as they are finally taking stock in what is known as one of the worst farm systems in baseball. One doesn’t often think of the Padres as a big spender, but with their moves last offseason it is well known that the time is willing to get into spending sprees when it needs to.

If the Padres were to sign Lazarito, he would immediately become one of their top-five prospects. However, they will need more than Lazarito to complete their partial rebuild. I would think that if this signing happens we would likely see the club part ways with their starting pitcher James Shields by the trade deadline.

This would give the team some much needed salary relief and give them another good prospect or two to add to their system. Much like San Francisco this would start a presence for the Padres on the international front, and would add yet another team to the list of big spenders gobbling up the top prospects from Latin America.
