NBA Trade Deadline 2016: 5 deals the Brooklyn Nets should make
By John Buhler
Part of what has been a major shortcoming for the Brooklyn Nets has been the lack of explosiveness coming from its backcourt. Ball handling has been an issue for a while now and the Nets struggle to score points from outside of the paint.
One such trade that could help the Nets in the long run is orchestrating a deal with the Orlando Magic to acquire guard Victor Oladipo, the No. 2 overall pick by the Magic in the 2013 NBA Draft. Oladipo has traits that scouts like out of both point and shooting guards. He’s great at attacking the paint, has tremendous athleticism, and could become a great defensive player out on the perimeter with the right coaching.
Essentially there are too many youngsters on the Magic for head coach Scott Skiles to manage. Since center Nikola Vucevic is nearly un-tradeable, moving Oladipo to the Nets for shooting guard Bojan Bogdanovic and power forward Thomas Robinson might make the numbers work.
Oladipo has two years worth $5,192,520 annually on his rookie deal. Bogdanovic has two years remaining worth $3,425,510 annually and Robinson has two years left worth $981,348. Oladipo would give the Nets explosiveness at guard. Bogdanovic gives Orlando better shooting from the perimeter and Robinson is another body Skiles could use in his frontcourt rotation.
Brining Oladipo to Brooklyn could stand as the backcourt piece the club needs to fully jumpstart this rebuild. Bogdanovic would help in offensive spacing in Orlando since Oladipo has yet to develop into a great jump shooter. He could play well alongside point guard Elfrid Payton as a spot-up jump shooter in Central Florida.
