2016 NFL offseason: Houston Texans needs
By Randy Gurzi
Quarterback Brock Osweiler
After suffering through four different starters in back-to-back seasons, Houston has to get serious about finding their future quarterback. Their 2015 primary starter, Brian Hoyer, isn’t that guy.
Drafting that guy may also prove to be difficult with the Texans owning the 22nd pick in the draft. Unless a player they covet falls to them, or at least far enough for them to strike a deal, they will have to look outside the draft.
One player set to be a free agent is Denver Broncos quarterback Brock Osweiler. The second round pick in 2012 spent the first three seasons of his career sitting behind Denver’s starter, Peyton Manning.
In 2015, Manning suffered a foot injury and the fourth-year player stepped in and played well. While completing 61.8 percent of his passes, the 6-foot-8 quarterback threw 10 touchdowns and six picks along with his 1,967 yards.
The most impressive thing he did however was lead the Broncos over the New England Patriots on a Sunday Night Football game with all eyes on him.
After being unable to secure the starting job, despite some belief he outplayed Manning, Osweiler could hit the open market and if so, Houston needs to jump.
While O’Brien got great production in 2014 from journeyman quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick and in 2015 from Hoyer, Brock is a superior talent to both. Working with the “quarterback whisperer” in Houston could be a great match for both coach and quarterback for years to come.
