Jason Pierre-Paul is suing Adam Schefter

Adam Schefter is getting sued by Jason Pierre-Paul for violation of privacy.

When Jason Pierre-Paul blew half his hand off in a Fourth of July fireworks accident, it turned out the missing digits weren’t the messiest part of the whole matter. Pierre-Paul needed to have part of his hand amputated, and ESPN reporter Adam Schefter broke the news on Twitter — as he’s been known to do.

But almost as soon as Schefter reported the news, everyone started wondering if the scoop master had broken the law to obtain this information. It harkens back to the idea that source reporting is nothing more than an ego play, as it’s a race to be first to news that will eventually be announced anyways.

This time, though, it might cost Schefter in court.

Here’s a piece of the lawsuit, which alleges Schefter improperly and illegally obtained Pierre-Paul’s medical records and ‘blasted’ them on Twitter.

"Schefter improperly obtained Plaintiff’s medical records from a hospital and then, out of a selfish desire to “break news,” electronically blasted the records to his approximately 4 million Twitter followers and made it available to anyone worldwide with Internet access."

This was something we thought might happen, as at the time of Schefter’s report there were questions raised about possible HIPPA law violations.

This is a pretty unprecedented case, as Schefter is being sued for what he does. The question is whether or not he illegally obtained and distributed the medical records of Pierre-Paul — which it appeared from the very start that he did.

It’s now up to the court to decide.
