5. The best management team in the game

Despite being the darlings of the offseason and winners of the winter, a new season is a reset point. And for all for all of their breakthrough wins, awards and favoritism in preseason predictions, it could all end up being for naught if they fail to live up to expectations. And that is where management comes into play.

The most important acquisition for the team in the past two years has not been Jon Lester, Jason Heyward, Dexter Fowler or John Lackey. Rather it has been Joe Maddon, who was both the glue and the motivating force for the young Cubs to propel themselves from the cellar of the NL Central and into the National League Championship series in a year’s time. Having Maddon on the bench ensures that the dugout and clubhouse will be light and the players are performing with confidence and fair opportunity.

And if Maddon is not enough of an impact, he is supported by a hungry to win owner in Dave Ricketts and a pair of brilliant baseball strategy minds in President of Baseball Operations, Theo Epstein, and general manager Jed Hoyer. This trio will continue to ensure the team pursue what it needs to live up to its sizable expectations and be in the best shape to break their pandemic of a streak of World Series absence.
