NBA Rumors: 5 destinations for unhappy Kyrie Irving
By John Buhler
Not that going to the New York Knicks would guarantee that Kyrie Irving would be the star player on the team, but there is a certain allure to playing 41 games a year at the basketball Mecca that is Madison Square Garden.
Potentially, Irving could go to the Knicks and form a new Big Three with small forward Carmelo Anthony and power forward Kristaps Porzingis. It seems that Anthony and Porzingis already have great chemistry in Porzingis’ first NBA season, but how would Irving mesh with that duo should he ultimately go there?
He does seem like the type of ball handler that could thrive running the Triangle Offense under interim head coach Kurt Rambis under Phil Jackson’s watch. Irving does play with a flash at the point that seems reminiscent to that of other Knicks’ greats.
Regardless of if Irving will ultimately gel with a player like Anthony, as they are both ball-dominant All-Stars, the Knicks need some help at point guard if they want to contend for an Eastern Conference Playoff spot as soon as next season.
While two of their Atlantic Division rivals in the Brooklyn Nets and the Philadelphia 76ers are both a long way from fielding competitive teams, the two other teams in the Atlantic in the Boston Celtics and the Toronto Raptors are poised to become elite teams in the Eastern Conference as soon as this spring’s playoffs.
This leaves the Knicks in the awful middle both in the Atlantic and frankly in the Eastern Conference. Bringing in Irving may not be ideal for chemistry, but it can’t be as bad as it was when Stephon Marbury came back home to play for the Knicks. New York would probably become a playoff team if they ended up with Irving at point guard one way or another.
