NBA Rumors: 5 destinations for unhappy Kyrie Irving
By John Buhler
If Kyrie Irving is going to leave the Cleveland Cavaliers because he’s unhappy with his situation there, he may want to make the Minnesota Timberwolves his destination of choice. Once the Timberwolves get a long-term solution at head coach over Sam Mitchell entering 2016-17, Minnesota might take their talented young corps and become a strong team in the Western Conference almost overnight.
While point guard Ricky Rubio is decent for the Timberwolves, imagine what that team could become if Irving was running the point. He’d easily be a better shooter than what Rubio would ever hope to be. His brilliance at playing point guard would only be intensified by playing with Andrew Wiggins, Karl-Anthony Towns, and Zach LaVine.
If Minnesota gets Irving in either a trade or in a free agency signing, it would be like the Timberwolves would get a re-do on the whole Stephon Marbury situation in the late 1990s. Marbury and Kevin Garnett were seriously about to take that expansion era team to great heights if egos didn’t get in the way.
For a more modern comparison, getting Irving in Minnesota would allow him to become the next generation’s version on Chris Paul at point guard. That collection of talent in Minnesota would certainly bring out the best in Irving’s playing style.
Having him running the offense could not only make the Timberwolves a Western Conference Playoff team, but potentially a team that could vie for a NBA Title in only a few years. Irving may have to get over himself with his role in Cleveland, as he already has a great shot at winning an NBA Championship. However should he want to leave, Minnesota seems like a great fit for the All-Star point guard.
