2016 NFL Free Agency: 5 teams that should sign Josh Norman
By John Buhler
In Week 15 of the 2015 NFL season, Carolina Panthers cornerback Josh Norman made his presence known by the New York Giants by instigating a very physical and emotional game between he and wide receiver Odell Beckham, Jr. While both players aren’t probably on the best of terms since what went down on that Sunday, December 20th, wouldn’t it be strange if Norman and Beckham were teammates in 2016?
New York had a lousy 2015 NFL season, going 6-10 with what was the worst pass defense in football. The Giants allowed a staggering 4,783 yards through the air. This total was over 200 yards worse that another historically bad defense in the 2015 New Orleans Saints.
For the Giants to end their four-year NFC Playoff drought, they will have to rectify their issues in the secondary. Eli Manning is a strong quarterback, but he can’t be expected to win shootouts for the Giants weekly because his defensive backfield can’t stop anybody. Manning throws to many interceptions to stand the chance at winning weekly shootouts.
Norman could come in and solidify the Giants on the outside as a great press coverage cornerback. His physicality on the outside would allow the Giants defense to put him on an island while they look to solve the rest of their defensive lapses on the other side of the field.
The Giants have a surprisingly large amount of cap space, despite playing in the NFL’s biggest media market. New York will have over $57.7 million to build itself a better team for former offensive coordinator and new head coach Ben McAdoo in 2016. One way to make New York more competitive is to fix the leaky secondary in free agency by spending top dollar on a high-end free agent still in his prime like Norman formerly of the Panthers.
