2016 NFL free agency: 5 teams who should sign Marques Colston
The Ravens simply have to do something about the wide receiver position this offseason. Given Baltimore’s terrible cap situation and the lack of receivers available, someone like Colston might be its best option.
Injuries were the primary reason for the Ravens’ poor season, as the roster is a lot more talented as their 5-11 record indicated. However, the Ravens will need to add some targets for Joe Flacco if they are going to contend in the AFC North in 2016.
After Steve Smith went down with a torn ACL, Baltimore really struggled to get any production from its wide receivers. Kamar Aiken turned in a surprising season by approaching 1,000 yards, but Baltimore’s next leading wide receiver other than Smith was Chris Givens with 346 yards.
Smith is expected to be ready for the start of 2016, although the Ravens shouldn’t count on getting too much out of a 36-year-old coming off of a major injury. Adding Colston would at least give the Ravens some stability at the position, and he could work well with Flacco as an explosive target. With Aiken, Colston and some young talent, the Ravens might get just enough out of the position to succeed.
Baltimore currently stands at about $8 million in cap space after the Flacco extension, making it very hard for it to sign any free agents. Still, Ozzie Newsome is an excellent general manager, and will find a way to get some deals done.
