There are several reasons that it makes sense for the Oklahoma City Thunder to pursue Horford. While it’s obvious that the organization can’t afford both Horford and superstar Kevin Durant, there is no guarantee that Durant will re-up with the Thunder for even one more year, as he too enters free agency.

Should Durant unwisely walk away from the Thunder this summer, the next best thing for Oklahoma City to do is to bring in head coach Billy Donovan’s greatest collegiate player in Horford into the fold with the Thunder. Horford could stand as a strong building block for a new era of Thunder basketball if Durant leaves and Westbrook follows in 2017.

Though the Thunder already have a crowded frontcourt with players like Steven Adams, Serge Ibaka, Nick Collison, and Enes Kanter, Donovan is almost certainly going to try to bring in players he recruited and coached while at the University of Florida in the coming offseasons.

Horford can’t be the best player on the Thunder if Oklahoma City has any hopes of winning an NBA championship. However, he could stand as the high-character, high-performance player the Thunder would love to have if they have to usher in a new era of basketball in OKC.
