This is a little complicated given that the Atlanta Hawks already have two strong point guards in starter Jeff Teague and sixth man Dennis Schroder, but would Mike Conley actually be the best fit for the Hawks at point guard in the Mike Budenholzer era in Atlanta?

Atlanta regrettably whiffed on taking true freshman Marvin Williams out of North Carolina with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2005 NBA Draft. Deron Williams of Illinois went No. 3 to the Utah Jazz and Chris Paul of Wake Forest went No. 4 to the then New Orleans Hornets.

The Hawks did ultimately a great point guard a few years later in Jeff Teague out of Wake Forest, but the franchise goes as their starting point guard goes. Teague is talented, but inconsistent. Schroder is young, raw, and exciting, but may lack the discipline to lead a playoff caliber team at the point.

With Atlanta likely going to role with both Paul Millsap and Al Horford in the frontcourt for the foreseeable future, might it make sense to pull off a sign-and-trade with the Grizzlies for Conley, sending Memphis either Teague or Schroder and a future first round pick?

Conley has at times been the driving force of the stagnant Grizzlies offense during the Grit N’ Grin era in Memphis. He’s already a great defensive player, imagine how well he would thrive running the point in Budenholzer’s heavy-ball movement offense.

Conley going to the Hawks makes Atlanta Eastern Conference Finals caliber for at the next three years before Horford and Millsap exit their prime. It serves Conley to got East to become a star in this league. Signing up for a few years in Atlanta with that coach and those players gives a better shot at title contention than he currently has in Memphis.
