5 free agency destinations for Mike Conley
By John Buhler
It’s not trendy or is it all that wise, but there is a strong chance that Mike Conley will re-up with the Memphis Grizzlies this summer in NBA Free Agency. He’s reportedly very close with center Marc Gasol, who re-signed with the Grizzlies in a long-term deal last summer to play for his adopted hometown. Gasol played high school ball in suburban Germantown when his older brother Pau starred for Memphis in the mid-2000s.
While the Grit N’ Grind era may have to come to a close here in the next year or so, as Memphis struggles mightily to play in the pace and space era of the NBA, Conley and Gasol, assuming his broken foot heals properly, could form the foundation of a new age of Grizzlies basketball.
Both players do have commendable offensive games and already have one of the game’s best pick-and-roll partnerships. They aren’t going to awe from beyond the arc with an impressive three-point game, but there is still immense value in having a point guard and a center that can create their own shot in the mid-range game while also being able to ferociously attack the basket.
The Memphis front office could opt for better offensive-minded player at both the three and the four to spread the floor more for the Grizzlies. Both Conley and Gasol still are able to generate strong offensive games, despite clunky spacing issues in the Memphis paint.
Conley knows what he has in Gasol and what Memphis can and would be able to provide him, but there are better options for him on the free agent market than he probably realizes. He’s one of the top four players entering free agency this summer and he’ll have more suitors that will want him running the point for their team. The option to re-sign with Memphis is still a very viable possibility for the career Grizzly.
