NFL free agency: Winners and losers
WINNER: Oakland Raiders
Typically, teams that spend big money are not going to be happy about it in a few seasons, but general manager Reggie McKenzie can give himself a pat on the back. While some would argue that $10 million per year for outside linebacker Bruce Irvin is too much (he has not eclipsed eight sacks since his rookie year), he provides a respectable counterpart to wunderkind Khalil Mack.
Most importantly, Oakland was able to secure guard Kelechi Osemele, who can also play tackle. Osemele comes expensive at $12 AAV, but he’s one of the best young lineman in the game and give the Raiders a serious interior of the offensive line along with Gabe Jackson and Rodney Hudson. Also, McKenzie stole corner Sean Smith away from the Kansas City Chiefs for a reasonable deal of four year and $40 million, $20 million guaranteed.
LOSER: Denver Broncos
General manager John Elway can spin this offseason however he likes, but the Hall of Famer is having a rough week. After losing defensive end Malik Jackson, Denver watched two retainable players leave in inside linebacker Danny Trevathan and quarterback Brock Osweiler.
Elway now has to fix the quarterback position by either signing Ryan Fitzpatrick, trading for Colin Kaepernick or drafting somebody at the back end of the first round. The Broncos might also lose running back C.J. Anderson to the Miami Dolphins on an offer sheet. The only signing has been right tackle Donald Stephenson, who was inconsistent at best with the Chiefs in his first four seasons.
