2. Giants sign DE Olivier Vernon

Contract: 5 years and $85 million, $52.5 million guaranteed

Coming into free agency, Olivier Vernon was arguably the most sought after player on the market. In a league where getting pressure on the quarterback is crucial and good pass rushers are scarce, Olivier Vernon is a very valuable player. Vernon has averaged a little over seven sacks a season over his career, which are good, but not elite numbers.

There are a few factors at play in this decision for the Giants. One, the Giants were 30th in the league in sacks last year and overall a poor defensive team. With the addition of Damon Harrison, the team solidified its run defense and with Vernon they get a big boost to their pass rush. Two, while the Giants did re-sign Jason Pierre-Paul, his on field production after his hand injury is still a big question mark. If Pierre-Paul never returns to form, the Giants have insurance by signing Vernon.

Third, Vernon is only 25 years old and putting up good numbers. By all indications, Vernon should continue to improve and have a solid chance of being an elite pass rusher in the years to come. The Giants needed major help on their defense and the signing of Vernon gives them the best guy on the market.
