Top 10 MLB rookies expected to be on Opening Day rosters
5. Kenta Maeda, SP, Los Angeles Dodgers
The Dodgers flexed their financial muscles in international free agency once again this offseason, adding Maeda on an eight-year contract that could exceed $100 million depending on incentives. Of the three major international free agents signed this offseason, Maeda has the best chance to become a star.
Most regard Maeda as a solid starting pitcher a step or two below prior Japanese stars like Yu Darvish and Masahiro Tanaka. However, there’s plenty of upside here, and Maeda will get a chance to prove himself right away, as he’s all but assured the No. 4 or 5 spot in the Dodgers rotation come Opening Day.
Maeda spent eight seasons in Japan as a starter, compiling a 2.39 ERA per Baseball Reference as one of the top pitchers in the Central League. While Maeda didn’t show dominant stuff with 7.4 strikeouts per nine innings, he was so successful due to pinpoint command that should translate well to the Majors.
The Dodgers have been particularly impressed with the deception Maeda has shown in early spring training starts, which could be a deadly combination with his outstanding command. Maeda has a solid fastball which can hit 93, an improving changeup, and a plus slider that he will rely on as an out pitch.
Injuries are the major concern for Maeda, as the Dodgers decided to add so many incentives to his contract due to issues with his physical. If Maeda is fully healthy, look for him to potentially turn into an MLB star as a rookie.
