The Magic like drafting long players with high defensive ceilings. Victor Oladipo, Aaron Gordon, Elfrid Payton, and Mario Hezonja were all seen as possibly elite defenders at this level heading into draft night. Skal would also fit the bill given his potential to become an effective shot blocking big man from the weak side with the quickness to switch out on the perimeter.

The problem with Skal has been inconsistency, which we have seen all season long. For the longest time, Labissiere was non existent in games, playing hardly any minutes and not doing anything with the opportunities he was given. Recently, however, he we have seen flashes of the player everybody thought he was going to be in his freshman season: a rim protecting, jump shooting big man that makes NBA scouts drool. For now, the 10th pick feels about right, but that could change with a few big games in March.

The Magic are probably best when they’re playing Aaron Gordon at power forward, the same position that Labissiere plays. Having two players at that position with different skill sets is fine, especially since Labissiere will bring shooting to a roster that is in dire need of it. You can also envision him being a great fit with Nikola Vucevic, given that Vucevic isn’t a rim protector or a shooter.
. PF. Kentucky. Skal Labissiere. 10. player. 38
