9. player. 104. . Defenseman. Calgary Hitmen (WHL). Jake Bean

It’s hard to predict what the Vancouver Canucks will do at the 2016 NHL Draft because they have multiple needs and they don’t have a strong prospect system. Their weakest link is their blue line so expect them to go after a defenseman. After Sergachyov, Juolevi, and Chychrun, the next best defenseman is up for debate. Vancouver needs more offense from their blue line, so drafting Jake Bean makes a ton of sense.

Bean draws a ton of comparisons to Red Wings defenseman Mike Green because of his offensive prowess. He is quite aggressive when carrying the puck up the ice. Much like Green, Bean needs to be more assertive and take charge more often. The talent is definitely there though and the Canucks desperately need a puck mover like Bean.

Unlike Green, Bean shows impressive poise in the defensive zone. No one will confuse him for Drew Doughty, but he is quite capable of handling his own in his own end. He makes great decisions with the puck and for a guy who handles the puck a lot, he doesn’t turn the puck over nearly as much as one would expect. While his stick handling must improve, his passing is top notch and so is his skating.

The Canucks desperately need puck movers on their blue line and Bean has the highest ceiling of all of the puck moving defensemen in the 2016 NHL draft.
