5. Providence sneaks by USC

All season long, it looked like the Providence Friars could stick with any team. On Thursday night in the round of 64, their season looked like it was about to be over.

Providence had a solid season with guys like Kris Dunn and Ben Bentil leading the way, but found itself in a rough situation, down by one to the eighth-seeded USC Trojans with just three seconds remaining.

Freshman guard Drew Edwards was getting ready to make the most crucial inbounds pass of his career and he happened to find a wide open Rodney Bullock who slipped way from the group of defenders toward the basket as he laid it in with 1.5 seconds remaining and leaving USC without a timeout and a full-court shot forthcoming.

The Friars won the game in what is factually considered an upset and will have a chance to play No. 1 North Carolina on Saturday. Many believe the Friars pose an interesting matchup to the Tar Heels and it could be a pretty close game.

Providence lives to see another day and the name of the game in the tournament is survive and advance. This was one of the more exciting baskets in March Madness’ first round of play.
